A Welcoming Church at the Heart of Pacific Grove

History

First Baptist Church of Pacific Grove is the oldest African American church in Monterey County, on the Central Coast and beyond. The church was officially founded on August 12, 1909, by a small band of believers who saw a need for African Americans to have a place to satisfy their spiritual needs in their own cultural environment and traditions.
1909
Over the years members have come not only from Pacific Grove, but from all over Monterey County, to include Monterey, Pebble Beach, Salinas, Seaside, Castroville and many other local communities. Among these were a core of believers trom diverse backgrounds such as workers at canneries, railroads servants at hotels, restaurants and private homes as well as military personnel, the earliest being the soldiers of the 9t Calvary. The church being the focal point for spirituality and socialization, provided the opportunity for immersion in their African American culture. From the meager earnings of the early members, the congregation built its own church rather than continue to meet in the homes of its members.

First Baptist Church of Pacific Grove is the mother church. Directly or indirectly approximately titteen Atrican American houses of worship trom Seaside to Salinas have been established since our humble beginnings, all to the glory of God spreading the word and rendering service throughout our community.
From its inception the church has been a center of leadership in the community. In 1932 the local branch of the NAACP was organized by Rev. Wellington Smith at the First Baptist Church. The church has remained active and weathered many challenges over its 110 years.
Through gallant fund-raising efforts, the first building was constructed on a lot at Fourth Street and Laurel Avenue. Later, the church built the edifice at its current location at Third Street and Laurel Avenue. The church continued to grow. A social hall and pastor's study were added. In 1966 the present edifice was built, spearheaded by Pastor Nance. The final addition was completed in 1987.
